We were so thoroughly welcomed and so pleased to observe the creative and fun expressions arising to meet our action. The people of Callicoon donated generously, made us beautiful ribbons to add to our streamer and brought out the yummiest things to eat. The men who addressed us spoke from their hearts about things that matter, food and water and trust within the community. When everyone walked with us out over the bridge and began throwing daffodils down to be carried away by the mighty Delaware I began to know right then, everything is going to be OK after all. Of course, we will take a stand for clean water!

We are grateful to the Delaware Youth Center for the use of their lovely pavilion and to Mary Handler, Kate Bowers and Ginny Boyle for their gentle clear wisdom and excellent coordinating efforts. Six women from NY and PA, grateful to live in a place of abundant clean water

2. We represent Mothers, Grandmothers, Sisters, and Daughters

3. We are moved to action by the threat of contaminated water from the extraction of fossil fuels.

4.Our concern over the harm that will come to our families and future generations

prevents us from simply living our lives peacefully and gratefully.

5. We demand that public health and quality of life for future generations take priority in decisions that affect everyone.

6. To illustrate our concerns we are carrying the most precious substance on the planet -water -90 miles on foot.

7. We do this to bring attention to how precious and vulnerable this essential resource truly is.

8 The need for clean water is something everyone has in common.

9. We seek to make this important point by visibly honoring what we love.

10 We bring good wishes to all water drinkers and bath takers.

When and where we are walking:

11. We are starting our walk on Aden Road, next to the Neversink Reservoir on Sunday April 17 at 9 am.

12. We will be walking between 12 and 18 miles a day.

13. Our destination is Salt Spring State Park. Sat April 23

14. We are ending there with a daylong celebration which begins at 10am.

15. We designed our action to include people we meet along our way and

16. we have local events happening at many of our stops along the way.

17. Our map and program schedule is available on our website as a pdf file. http://www.walkaboutwater.blogspot.com/

18. Parts of our route are very beautiful for walking, we welcome company on the back roads but

19. Not where there is faster traffic and narrow shoulders. Please walk responsibly.

20. If you want to carry something, bring along a pitcher or teapot, tin cup, watering can or bucket

as an illustration of our universal need for water.

To support our action:

21.We are fundraising to cover our expenses and to benefit Shaletest, an organization dedicated to environmental testing.

22. If you want to recieve a tax deduction please donate directly to http://www.shaletest.org/ Your donation will help provide air, water or soil testing for those in need.
23. We need money for gas for our support crew, park fees, food and lodging.
24. For a fun way to support Walk About Water get a 5 foot length of 1 1/2 inch wide fabric ribbon and get four of your friends togehter and paint your names or message on it. Each person donates 4 or 5 dollars, get them to us and we will make the ribbons into streamers for us to carry as we walk along.
25. You can mail ribbons and donations to Walk about Water, PO Box 222, Boiceville NY 12412
26.We also have some pretty T-shirts for sale available on our website and facebook.
www.walkaboutwater.blogspot.com and find us on facebook search Walk About Water
27. When the intersections of politics, economics and science result in a situation that bears no resemblance to common sense, art is the only sane response.

28. Water is eternal. Gas is so temporary it is gone the instant it is useful.

29. We women refuse to sit quietly while clean water needed by everyone is foolishly squandered in the pursit of temporary benefits.

30. Water is life and like it or not, we are all wet together.

walkaboutwater@aol.com

Meals not yet covered, help support our efforts with meal gifts thanks

a metaphor for a being known as a Bodhisattva.

There comes a time when all life on earth is in great danger. Great barbarian powers have arisen, unrestrained and blind with lust for power, loving not the earth, not her beauty, but only power. Although they amass untold stores of wealth and resources, they squander their holdings in massive preparations to annihilate each other. Sworn mortal enemies, they are intimately connected, like images in a mirror, and have much in common: weapons of unfathomable devastation and technologies that lay waste the world.

So, it is now, in this time of danger, when the future of all beings hangs by the frailest of threads, that the Kingdom of Shambhala emerges.

You cannot go to Shambhala for it is not a place. The Kingdom of Shambhala exists in the hearts and minds of the Shambhala warriors. But you cannot recognize Shambhala warriors by sight, for they wear no uniform or insignia, there are no banners, crests or shields. And they have no barricades from which to threaten the enemy, for the Shambhala warriors have no land of their own. Always they move on the terrain of the barbarians themselves.

Now comes the time when great courage is required of these warriors, moral and physical courage. For they must go into the very heart of the barbarian power and dismantle the monstrous weapons. To remove these weapons, in every sense of the word, they must go into the corridors of power where the decisions are made and the weapons are devised and guarded.

The Shambhala warriors know they can do this because they understand that the weapons, however horrible their carnage and vast their reach, are "manomaya"—all these weapons and all their devastation are created by the human mind. So they can be unmade by the human mind.

The dangers that threaten life on Earth do not come from evil deities or malevolent extraterrestrial powers. They arise directly from our own choices and relationships. So the Shambhala warriors must go forward to defeat them with only two weapons of their own.

The weapons of the Shambhala warriors are compassion and insight. Compassion moves us to act on behalf of other beings, from the fire of our hearts, yet by itself its heat can burn us out. So the second weapon is needed as well: insight into the interdependent, co-arising nature of all things. This lets us see that the battle to be waged is not between good people and bad people, but rather, that the line between good and evil runs through every human heart. With insight we realize that we are interconnected, and that each act undertaken with pure motivation affects the entire web, bringing consequences we cannot measure or even see. Yet insight alone can be too cool, so to proceed with strength and clarity, we need the fuel and fire of compassion, of our openness to the world's pain.

Used skillfully and courageously, these together are the only tools available to the Shambhala warrior to disarm the weapons of the barbarians and bring into being the kingdom of Shambhala. Armed with these weapons and single-minded intention, these warriors will bring their kingdom into being.

This legend of the Shambhala warrior, of the bodhisattva path to disarming evil and creating the reality of peace, is available to us, and valuable to us, as we face the unprecedented challenges of these times.

walkaboutwater@aol.com

APRIL 23RD 2011 SALT SPRINGS STATE PARK

Last night I went to Binghamton City hall for an opening of Our Pricelss Planet exhibit. It's there till late April. I highly recommend it if you can get there. I was blown away by one exhibit in particular I'm sorry I don't know the artists name. She had a video of the most amazing tree I've ever seen. It's located in Kenya. The roots extend over the edge of an opening in the ground reaching a long distance to a pool of water. I was struck by it's beauty and even in the video I could feel the spirtual power of this incredible tree. She had also made very large paintings of some images from the video. WOW that is all I can say. I hope you get to go see it!
The Amphora made for us to carry the water in on the Walk About Water is also displayed there (only until late March). It is very beautiful. I got to carry it on the way down to the confluence park(and delighted to find out it's light) where it was presented to us and water from Buttermilk Falls PA was transfered into it while the 2 dozen or so attendees chanted a water chant. The procession back to City Hall was lead by a woman playing bag pipes! That was great fun..
Chris, Deanna and I stayed overnight with Lynn and today we walked part of the route for Walk About Water only about 6 or 7 miles. We checked out a couple of D&H Rail Trail Heads(which is where we will walk on thursday of the walk week) and found a park where we hope to have Thursday's event.

Here are a couple of links I think you might find interesting. I certainly did.

H2OPE
"In times gone by we only knew our little patch of place
far away and other people, never really face to face

But now our view has widened and we perceive the loom
our collective choices, adding up to likely doom

our fathers made the fiber and our mothers spun us well and true
but each thread is easily broken, alone there is little we can do

so now is the time for weaving life together strong and fine
what is the story of this tapestry to be told for the rest of time?

let our fabric clothe our mother earth in dignity and grace
and include well being and freedom into every human face

let us honor the fact that nature is our only healthy home
and future generations be given cause to admire what we have done

oh let me be a thread in the fabric of our time

We work to take care of the world.

We respect the Mother Earth... [W}e know that the land is our Mother Earth.

If we plant an orange tree or any type of tree and then dig it up by the roots it will die. Digging out the earth’s gold is the same thing. It could die. We’ve all heard many stories that the world is dying. Why is it dying? It is because they have robbed so many tombs. The world is like a person. Robbing tombs, stealing its gold, it will die. We don’t take out the earth’s gold. We know that it is there but we do not take it. We know from our divinations that the advice of the Mother is not to take the gold. We know where it is but we decide only to make offerings to it.

How is it that we are able to live? Without blood we cannot live and without bones we cannot walk. Here all the Mamas [teachers, custodians of Kogi cosmological thought] are in agreement about what it is we are going to say and how to speak. If i cut off my foot I cannot walk. When they [the Younger Brothers, us] dig into the earth and take it’s gold it is the same thing....Gold has it’s own thought and it can speak. It is a living being. They must stop stealing it.

If they take all the gold the world will end. The Mothers of banana trees, of all the trees and of all the birds, they have all been stolen. They are cutting off the flesh of the Mother’s body. They have taken everything. They have stolen the spirits of all things from the Mother. They are stealing the very spirit and thought of the Mother...

It is the mountains which make the waters, the rivers and the clouds. If the trees are felled they will not produce any more water. We do not cut down the trees that grow by rivers, we know that they protect the water. We do not cut down huge areas of forest like the Younger Brother does, we cut small clearings for our fields. The Mother told us not to cut down many trees, so we cut very few, tiny patches.

If the Younger Brother keeps cutting down all the trees, there will be fires because the sun will heat the earth.... We are the Elder Brothers so we have to think clearly....

Younger Brother, stop doing it. You have already taken so much. We need water to live. The Mother told us how to live properly and how to think well. We’re still here and we haven’t forgotten anything.

The earth is decaying, it is losing its strength because they have taken away much petrol, coal, many minerals. Younger Brother thinks, Yes! Here I am! I know much about the universe! But this knowing is learning to destroy the world, to destroy everything, all humanity.... The Mother is suffering. They have broken her teeth and taken out her eyes and ears. She vomits, she has diarrhoea, she is ill.

If we cut off our arms, we can’t work, if we cut off our legs, we can’t walk. That is how it is with the Mother. The Mother is suffering. She has nothing.

Does the Younger Brother understand what he has done? Does he?

walkaboutwater@aol.com

"EARTHSTEWARDS COALITION II:OUR PRICELESS PLANET" ART SHOW OPENS MARCH 4, 2011

More than twenty-five artists from across New York State will be featured at an exhibit opening in Binghamton 's City Plaza Gallery on First Friday, March 4, 2011 , from 6 to 9 PM . Included in the show are works in a wide variety of media, including paintings, pastels, photographs, sculpture, quilts, installation, and assemblage. The pieces included in "Our Priceless Planet" express to viewers a deep love and connection with Mother Earth and all of creation. The intention of the show is to be an antidote to the anxiety being experienced by many individuals today, which is rooted in our extreme disconnection with the natural world. When human beings are out of relationship with nature, nature becomes an object for domination, rather than a subject with the inherent right to her own existence. Alternatively, when we allow ourselves to "come into the peace of wild things", we remember our primordial origins and our place within the larger whole, and we are healed on a soul-level which contributes to the healing of Mother Earth.

A WATER BLESSING CEREMONY will precede the opening at 5:15 PM at Confluence Park . A handcrafted ceramic vessel which will be carried by women participating in WALK ABOUT WATER later in April will be dedicated, followed by
the vessel's installation in City Plaza Gallery as part of "Our Priceless Planet." Walk About Water is a grassroots initiative by women to raise awareness of the sacredness of water, food, and the beauty and purity of our natural environment.

City Plaza Gallery, located at 38 Hawley Street , 2nd floor, is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM . "EarthStewards Colaition II: Our Priceless Planet" runs through April 29, 2011 .The show is organized by the Gaia Grrrls, an ad hoc group of activist women artists from Binghamton, New York. Lynn Senick was born in the city of Philadelphia. As a child she spent summers in Laurel Lake in southern NJ where she learned a deep appreciation for our planet and it's beauty and resources. As a mother of four she longed to raise her children in a more natural and pure environment than Philadelphia afforded. She and her family moved to Susquehanna County, PA in 1989 to achieve this dream. Lynn had a small homestead in Brooklyn, PA where they raised small livestock and gardened. The rapidly developing gas extraction industry in Susquehanna County has alarmed her and she is concerned about the effects of the intensive gas development on the abundant water resources of her county and on all of the Marcellus Shale region. Salt Springs State Park is a sacred and healing place to her and she is thankful the Walk About Water will honor this special place.
walkaboutwater@aol.com

Annie Lenihan

Annie Lenihan was born in New York City with a cord wrapped around her neck and an allergy to her mother's milk. She has been fighting ever since.
